This superb grand sonnerie portico Clock was made in Vienna during the mid 1800s. The exquisitely finished silk thread calendar movement is original and has been completely overhauled and restored to great working condition. The gorgeous case of ebonised hardwood with its gleaming brass bezel and face has a porcelain chapter ring and calendar ring. It has alabaster pillars and gilded ornamentation of both brass and wood. It also has a brass sunshine cameo pendulum. The grand sonnerie clock strikes the quarter and the appropriate hour on a pair of melodious deep gongs every fifteen minutes. These clocks were often used in churches and monasteries so people could hear the time without being near the clock to see what hour it was and thus perform the correct prayers etc. There are a couple of small nicks in the finish at the back top edge of the case. Key and pendulum are included. It measures 13.5 inches by 5 inches by 20.25 inches high.
